Where it all began

Thalathaea began after a lifetime of frustration that eventually became impossible to ignore.

I have always had sensitive skin, particularly on my hands. Easily irritated, with perpetually dry cuticles, and winter always intensifying the symptoms. My fingers and knuckles would become so dry that they would crack and bleed just from simple movements. I have memories from when I was at school, with bandaids all over my fingers to stop the bleeding.

I’ve dealt with the pain and embarrassment all my life, but it was after the birth of my second baby boy that my skin became more difficult to manage than ever before.

I had two little ones in nappies and was constantly washing my hands. I would religiously apply creams in an attempt to settle the pain and nourish my skin, only to wash my hands again a short time later and feel that nourishment being stripped away. The cycle was relentless.

I tried so many different products, searching for something that would give my skin the care it needed and settle the irritation. Eventually, I had to resort to a pharmaceutical product. It was a relief to find something that worked for my sensitivity, but it didn’t offer the kind of nourishing, skin-conditioning benefits I was looking for. Nor was it something I particularly wanted sitting on my vanity.

Why did choosing something gentle for sensitive skin mean compromising on the experience?

Why couldn’t a product be formulated for sensitive skin while also being luxurious?

And why, when there are so many beautifully formulated products for our face, were our hands still so overlooked?

Then, one small moment brought that lifetime frustration into focus.

My eldest son was starting at a new daycare, and on his first day I needed to set up my fingerprint to enter the building. My fingers were so cracked that the scanner wouldn’t register. It took six different fingers before I finally managed to get a reading. I was so embarrassed, but more importantly, it was painful.

There had to be another way.

Where the idea began

Not long after, I was venting to my dad about what had happened. I was essentially complaining about how I wished I could find a better hand wash — something that would cleanse without leaving my skin feeling stripped and depleted.
My dad, a retired industrial chemist, simply said:
“Why don't you make one?”

At first, I laughed it off. But then I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I was breastfeeding my baby at the time, which gave me a lot of time to think. Soon, every feed became an opportunity to research ingredients. That led to researching how skincare products are formulated, which led to researching formulators and manufacturers, and before I knew it, I was completely obsessed.

What had begun as a personal frustration had become something much bigger: an opportunity to create the hand and body skincare I had needed for myself all my life.

A different approach to everyday care

We have become accustomed to carefully considered formulations, sophisticated ingredients and products designed around specific skin concerns for our faces. Yet our hands are exposed to almost everything we encounter throughout the day — water, weather, cleansing, cleaning products and sanitiser — and they are rarely considered in our skincare routines.

I started to wonder why hand and body care couldn’t receive the same level of thought and consideration.

I wanted to create products that were gentle enough for sensitive skin, while still offering meaningful skin benefits and an elevated sensory experience. The formulations needed to be intentional, every ingredient to have a purpose, and the products themselves to look and feel beautiful enough to belong in your home.

I wanted to create a ritual.

Finding beauty in the everyday

Life is busy, particularly for women who are balancing work, family and the endless small responsibilities that fill our days. The idea of adding another self-care task can sometimes feel like the opposite of self-care.

I didn’t want Thalathaea to ask for more of your time. I wanted to take something we’re already doing and elevate it.

Small, familiar moments that happen every day, transformed into an opportunity to pause, even briefly, and enjoy the experience.

For me, that is what an elevated ritual means. It isn’t necessarily about having more time. It’s about finding a little luxury in moments that are already happening.
The formulation, texture, fragrance and design all became part of that experience. I wanted Thalathaea to feel considered from the moment you reached for a product to the moment you finished using it.

A little luxury that fits into your busy life.

When good enough isn't enough

After more than three years of bringing Thalathaea to life, there were certainly moments when I questioned whether I had made the right decision.

Moments of imposter syndrome. Times when people encouraged me to stop refining and simply launch, telling me that it was already good enough or that I could always make changes later.
But that was not an option for me. I was doing it right, or not at all.
For me, every detail — from the gentle, efficacious formulation to the sensory experience and the packaging — mattered equally, and I wasn’t going to rest until it was right.

I had started this journey because I couldn’t find what I was looking for, so there was no way I was going to compromise on what I wanted to achieve.

So I kept going.

And somewhere along the way, the reason I was creating Thalathaea became bigger than my own hands.

Why Thalathaea exists

When I look back at where this began, it still feels surreal.

A new baby. A conversation with my dad. Rabbit holes of research while breastfeeding at all hours. Three years of formulation, testing and refinement. More packaging samples than I care to remember. And moments when I wondered whether I had made the right decision.

But I also look at what Thalathaea has become and know exactly why I kept going.
Thalathaea was created because I believe sensitive skin deserves more. It deserves to be protected and nourished, but it shouldn’t mean choosing between gentle and luxury.

It should be possible to care for your skin while still enjoying the experience.
