Understanding the Skin Barrier, Triggers & Care

Sensitive skin can be difficult to define because it doesn't always look the way we expect it to.

It may show up as redness or dryness, or as tightness, stinging, burning or itching. Sometimes the skin looks completely normal, yet still feels uncomfortable.

Sensitivity can vary enormously — from occasional and mild to persistent and severe, and it may affect just one area or be experienced more generally. It can also change over time, becoming more reactive during periods of stress, environmental change or following exposure to something that doesn't agree with the skin.

Understanding what can trigger sensitivity and how the skin barrier fits into the picture can make caring for sensitive skin feel much less complicated.

When skin becomes more reactive

There is an important distinction between sensitive skin and sensitised skin, although the terms are often used interchangeably.

Sensitive skin relates to a tendency towards heightened reactivity, which may be experienced regularly or intermittently. Sensitised skin, on the other hand, is often used to describe skin that has become temporarily more reactive as a result of something that has caused disruption or irritation. Both can be triggered or aggravated by everyday experiences.

Over-cleansing, exposure to harsh products, environmental conditions, excessive exfoliation or simply putting the skin under more stress than it can comfortably manage can all contribute to irritation. Certain skin conditions can also be associated with sensitivity.

And sometimes, there isn't one obvious cause at all.
Sensitive skin is complex. Current evidence suggests that both the skin barrier and the skin's sensory nervous system can play a role.

Our protective barrier against the world

The skin barrier is one of those phrases we hear frequently in skincare, but it is worth understanding what it actually means.

The outermost layer of the epidermis, known as the stratum corneum, acts as an important protective barrier between our skin and the outside world. It helps limit water loss while also helping to protect the skin from external substances and environmental influences.
When the skin barrier is functioning well, the skin is better able to retain moisture and manage everyday exposure. When it becomes compromised, water can escape more readily and the skin may become dry, flaky, rough, irritated or more reactive.

This is one reason hydration and barrier care are so closely connected.

What your skin may be responding to

There isn't one universal trigger for sensitive skin.

Temperature changes, wind, sunlight, dry air, water, pollution, cosmetics and emotional stress have all been identified as potential triggers, although individual responses vary considerably.

This is why two people can use exactly the same product and have completely different experiences.

A product that feels perfectly comfortable to one person may cause irritation or discomfort for someone with reactive skin. The same can be true of environmental conditions: a cold, windy day may leave one person's skin completely unaffected while another experiences dryness and irritation almost immediately.

Fragrance is another example. Some people tolerate fragranced products beautifully, while others find that fragrance is a trigger for irritation. Many believe that natural fragrances are gentler on the skin than synthetic fragrances, yet natural fragrance ingredients can also contain substances capable of causing irritation or sensitisation. For those with particularly reactive skin, choosing fragrance-free products can be one way of reducing potential triggers.

The key is not to assume that every person with sensitive skin needs exactly the same routine.
It is to understand your own skin and how to care for it.

Why our hands deserve more consideration

Our hands have a particularly demanding role and are constantly exposed.
We wash them repeatedly throughout the day. We expose them to hot and cold water, hand sanitiser, cleaning products, weather and everything else that comes with simply getting on with life.

And unlike our face, our hands rarely receive the same level of attention in our skincare routines.

Frequent washing is an essential part of everyday hygiene, but repeated exposure to water and cleansing can also contribute to dryness and irritation, particularly when the skin is already vulnerable.

This is where a thoughtful approach to hand care becomes important.

Rather than waiting until the skin feels dry, tight or uncomfortable, consistent moisturising can help support the skin's hydration and barrier function. Lotions work through different processes, including humectants that attract water, emollients that help soften and smooth the skin, and occlusive ingredients that help reduce water loss from the surface.

For hands that are washed many times a day, including lotion as part of your routine can be far more useful than treating it as an occasional rescue step.

A more considered approach to sensitive skin

Caring for sensitive skin isn't necessarily about having an elaborate routine.

In fact, it can be quite the opposite.

The goal is to understand what your skin responds well to, minimise unnecessary irritation and support the barrier consistently.

That might mean being mindful of how often you exfoliate, avoiding harsh cleansing and hot water, paying attention to environmental conditions or introducing new products one at a time so you can understand how your skin responds.

It can also mean recognising that ‘natural’ doesn't automatically mean non-irritating, and ‘strong’ doesn't automatically mean more effective.

Sensitive skin doesn't need to be deprived of beautiful skincare. It simply benefits from a more considered approach to what we put on it.

And perhaps that is the most useful thing to remember: sensitive skin isn't something that needs to be constantly fought or corrected.

It needs to be understood.

Care, without compromise

For anyone who has lived with sensitive skin, the experience can sometimes feel like a series of compromises.

Choosing something gentle, but not particularly enjoyable. Choosing something beautiful, but wondering how your skin will respond. Avoiding anything unfamiliar because finding something that works feels too valuable to risk.

We believe there is another way.
At Thalathaea, our approach to hand + body skincare begins with the belief that sensitive skin deserves thoughtful, efficacious care without sacrificing the luxury experience.

Because caring for your skin should be something you look forward to.

Not something you have to endure.
